  • Tech Tips 2. SOLVING NOISE PROBLEMS

Brake noise is one of the major reasons for a driver to visit the workshop, and often creates dissatisfaction in otherwise happy customers. It can be a complex issue, and is often a difficult one to solve. Ferodo provides provides an insight into the causes of brake noise and correct pad removal.

  • Tech Tips 3. SOLVING NOISE PROBLEMS

The easiest way to avoid problems is to ensure that the brake pads and caliper are correctly assembled from the start. Following these extra instructions for reassembly should help avoid vibrations and the associated noise, and allow drivers a smooth comfortable ride.

  • Tech Tips 4. VAPOUR LOCK

LOSS OF BRAKING EFFICIENCY HAS MANY FACES Drivers can experience loss of braking efficiency in many different ways: overheating, brake fade, and brake pad degradation are but a few. Vapour lock is one of the most frightening and most dangerous of all. This leafl et explains the problem, and offers some ways to prevent this from happening.

  • Tech Tips 5. VAPOUR LOCK

VAPOUR LOCK In the previous leafl et Vapour Lock N°1 we discussed the cause of vapour lock and provided some insights into choosing the correct fluid according to needs and highlighted the wet and dry boiling points. However, it is just as important to check brake fluid regularly and, when moisture content is too high, to replace the brake fluid.

  • Tech Tips 6. BRAKE JUDDER

Brake judder is the vibration felt through the steering wheel and suspension when the brakes are applied at certain speeds and pressures. It can vary from a barely noticeable vibration to a violent judder, and can be experienced in two ways:

  • Tech Tips 7. BRAKE JUDDER

Brake judder is the vibration felt through the steering wheel and suspension when the brakes are applied at certain speeds and pressures. In the previous leaflet Brake Judder N°1 we already discussed a few causes of brake judder and provided you with the appropriate solutions. But apart from hub and/or disc run-out and severe overheating, there’s another factor that can cause this vibration problem.

  • Tech Tips 8. SPONGY PEDAL FEEL

Spongy pedal feel is the experience where upon depressing the brake pedal, the brake is slow to respond, and the pedal feels spongy – softer than it should be, with excessive force required to decelerate the vehicle and excessive stroke of the pedal.

  • Tech Tips 9. C.V. BRAKE ADJUSTMENT RUNNING CLEARANCE

Commercial vehicle brakes can overheat for a number of reasons. One of the most common, and most easily solved is due to incorrect setting of the running clearance between brake pad and disc.

  • Tests 1. METRES AHEAD OF THE COMPETITION

To equip technicians with the vital knowledge to explain why fitting a leading brand such as Ferodo means that motorists can maintain original braking performance, the R&D team at Federal-Mogul, owners of the Ferodo brand, have carried out a series of benchmarking tests. The tests cover the key performance characteristics that vehicle makers look for when it comes to choosing brake pads for Original Equipment. The results of the first test, covering stopping distances, are provided here.

The results of the second test, covering noise performance, are provided here.

  • Tests 3. PEDAL FEEL

Ever driven a car with poor brake pedal feel? One minute you need to only lightly touch the pedal to bring the vehicle to a stop, and the next you have to slam your foot down to achieve the same result. That lack of control over the car can be a really scary experience. But, the good news is that braking inconsistency like that does not happen when you’ve fitted Ferodo brakes.

  • Tests 4. DURABILITY

You can tell the quality of your brakes by measuring a number of factors, including stopping distance, pedal feel and noise. Ferodo is already proven to outperform the competition in these three fields. We can now add a fourth: durability.

  • Tests 5. COMPRESSIBILITY

Whether you run a fleet of commercial vehicles or just repair them, one of your biggest concerns is keeping them on the road, running smoothly without accidents or unnecessary downtime. Brake quality and brake performance are key in achieving this. The compressibility of a brake pad’s friction material should be within certain limits. It should be hard enough to ensure good pedal feel, minimal wear and sufficient power transfer from the pads to the disc. And at the same time it should be elastic enough to ensure sufficient grip on different disc surfaces.
